Hadith on Nawafil: Voluntary prayers separated from obligatory prayers

Mu’awiyyah reported: When you perform the Friday prayer, do not pray another prayer until you have spoken or left the mosque. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded us to do that, to not connect two prayers together unless we have spoken or we have left.

Al-Nawawi said, “In this is evidence for what is said by our scholars, that for regular voluntary prayers and others it is recommended to move them from the place where an obligatory prayer was performed to another place. It is best to move them to one’s house, or else he can move to another place in the mosque or elsewhere, to increase the places where he has performed prostration and to distinguish the performance of voluntary prayers from obligatory prayers.”
