Hadith on Lusts: Beware of hidden passions, acts of ostentation

Ibn Ghanam reported: Shaddad ibn Aws, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Verily, what I fear most for you people is what I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, of hidden lusts and idolatry.” ‘Ubadah ibn al-Samit and Abu Darda said, “May Allah forgive! Did not the Prophet narrate to us that Satan has given up being worshiped on the Arabian Peninsula? As for hidden lusts, we understand them to be the lusts of the world, of its women and its cravings. What is this idolatry you fear for us, O Shaddad?” Shaddad said, “I think if you saw a man praying to be seen by another man, or fasting or giving charity for his sake, do you not see that he has committed an act of idolatry?” They said, “Yes. By Allah, whoever prays to be seen by a man, or fasts or gives in charity for his sake, he has committed an act of idolatry.”

In another narration, it was said, “What is hidden lust?” Shaddad said, “It is that one of you wakes up in the morning to fast, then he is exposed to a lust among the lusts of the world and he breaks his fast.”
