Umar II on Patience: Reward of patience is better than material blessings

Muhammad ibn Amr reported: I heard Umar ibn Abdul Aziz, may Allah have mercy on him, say upon the pulpit, “Allah does not grant a servant a blessing and then removes the blessing, then compensates him with patience in place of what was removed, but that what he was granted is better than what was taken away.” Then he recited the verse, “Verily, the reward of the patient will be fulfilled without account,” (39:10).
