Umar on Slaves: Umm walad is emancipated when her master dies

Abdullah ibn Umar reported: Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “When a servant woman gives birth from her master, then he may not sell her, or bestow her, or bequeath her. He may enjoy her and she becomes free when he dies.”

Al-Zurqani said, “This was said by Uthman, most of the successors, the four Imams, and the majority of jurists. When Umar prohibited selling them, it became prohibited by consensus.”
