Hadith on Prayer: Protect prayer from disruption with a barrier

April 15, 2018

Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “If one of you stands for prayer, he is screened by a barrier (sutrah) if there is an object before him like the back of saddle. If there is nothing like the back of a saddle before him, his prayer is disrupted by the passing of a donkey, a woman, or a black dog.

Ibn Hajar said, “Al-Shafi’i and others inclined to interpret ‘disruption’ in the tradition of Abu Dharr to mean a lessening of humble devotion, not an exit from prayer entirely.”
