Moses on Envy: An honored servant does not envy or spread gossip

Musa ibn Sa’eed reported: When Allah brought Moses close in intimate conversation, he saw a servant at the foot of the Throne. Moses, upon him be peace, said, “O Lord, who is this servant that I might act as he did?” It was said, “O Moses, this servant was righteous to his parents, he did not envy people, and he did not spread gossip.”

عن موسى بن سعيد قَالَ لَمَّا قَرَّبَ اللهُ مُوسَى نَجِيًّا رَأَى عَبْدًا تَحْتَ الْعَرْشِ فَقَالَ عليه السلام يَا رَبِّ مَنْ هَذَا الْعَبْدُ لِعَلِّي أَعْمَلُ مِثْلَ عَمَلِهِ فَقِيلَ يَا مُوسَى هَذَا عَبْدٌ كَانَ بَرًّا لِوَالِدَيْهِ وَكَانَ لَا يَحْسُدُ النَّاسَ وَكَانَ لَا يَمْشِي بِالنَّمِيمَةِ
