Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The most complete of believers in faith are those with the best character, careful around others, friendly and befriended. He is not one of us who is neither friendly, nor befriended.”

Imam al-Munawi commented, “The believer befriends others due to the beauty of his character, the ease of his temperament, and the gentleness of his nature. In another narration, ‘friendly and befriended.’ The ‘friendly’ is one who remains attached and close to something. Thus, the believer becomes attached to goodness and to the people of goodness, and they become attached to him due to the affinity created by faith. There is no good in one who neither befriends nor is befriended due to the weakness of his faith, the harshness of his character, and the badness of his temperament. Affection and social harmony are among the causes of holding firmly to Allah and to His rope. Through them unity is achieved among the Muslims, while through their opposite estrangement and division arise among them. Such affection is only attained through divine enabling.”

قال المناوي المؤمن يألف لحسن أخلاقه وسهولة طباعه ولين جانبه وفي رواية ألف مألوف والألف اللازم للشيء فالمؤمن يألف الخير وأهله ويألفونه بمناسبة الإيمان ولا خير فيمن لا يألف ولا يؤلف لضعف إيمانه وعسر أخلاقه وسوء طباعه والألفة سبب للاعتصام بالله وبحبله وبه يحصل الإجماع بين المسلمين وبضده تحصل النفرة بينهم وإنما تحصل الألفة بتوفيق إلهي
