Mu’awiyah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “No doubt, the people of the Book before you split into seventy-two sects and this religion will split into seventy-three sects, seventy-two will be in the Hellfire and one will be in Paradise. It is the united community. Verily, there will emerge people in my nation who will be infected by these vain desires, just as rabies from a dog runs through its victim.”

Grade: Hasan (fair) according to Al-Arna’ut
Imam al-Khattabi commented, “His statement, “just as rabies runs through its victim,” refers to a disease that afflicts a person from the bite of a rabid dog. Rabies is a disease that affects the dog, resembling madness. Its signs are that its eyes become red, it continually tucks its tail between its legs, and whenever it sees a person, it attacks him. If this dog bites a person, harmful symptoms appear in him. Among them is that he refrains from drinking water until he perishes from thirst. He continuously asks for water, but when water is brought to him, he does not drink it. Rabies is a grave disease. When it courses through a person, it continues to advance until he is destroyed.”

عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَلَا إِنَّ مَنْ قَبْلَكُمْ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ افْتَرَقُوا عَلَى ثِنْتَيْنِ وَسَبْعِينَ مِلَّةً وَإِنَّ هَذِهِ الْمِلَّةَ سَتَفْتَرِقُ عَلَى ثَلَاثٍ وَسَبْعِينَ ثِنْتَانِ وَسَبْعُونَ فِي النَّارِ وَوَاحِدَةٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ وَهِيَ الْجَمَاعَةُ وَإِنَّهُ سَيَخْرُجُ مِنْ أُمَّتِي أَقْوَامٌ تَجَارَى بِهِمْ تِلْكَ الْأَهْوَاءُ كَمَا يَتَجَارَى الْكَلْبُ لِصَاحِبِهِ

قال الخطابي وقوله كما يتجارى الكلب لصاحبه فإن الكلب داء يعرض للإنسان من عضة الكلب الكلِب وهو داء يصيب الكلب كالجنون وعلامة ذلك فيه أن تحمر عيناه وأن لا يزال يدخل ذنبه بين رجليه وإذا رأى إنساناً ساوره فإذا عقر هذا الكلب إنساناً عرض له من ذلك أعراض رديئه منها أن يمتنع من شرب الماء حتى يهلك عطشاً ولا يزال يستسقي حتى إذا سقي الماء لم يشربه فالكلب داء عظيم إذا تجارى بالإنسان تمادى وهلك
