Hadith on Apostasy: Allah accepts an apostate’s repentance

Ibn Abbas reported: A man among the Ansar embraced Islam and then he became an apostate and joined the idolaters, but he regretted it later. He sent word to his people, saying, “Ask the Messenger of Allah if there is any repentance for me.” His people came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and they said, “He has regretted what he has done, and he wants us to ask you if there is any repentance for him.” Thus, Allah revealed, “How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their faith,” up to His words, “Except for those who repent after that and correct themselves. Verily, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (3:86-89) They sent for him and he embraced Islam.
