Hadith on Understanding: The avoidance of harm is the objective of Islam

Ibn Abbas reported: A man was wounded during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. The man had a nocturnal emission, so he was ordered to perform a ritual bath without a concession. The water seeped into his wound causing his death. When this news reached the Prophet, he said, “They killed him! May Allah curse them! Is not the cure for ignorance to ask?”

In another narration, the Prophet said, “Why did they not ask if they did not know? Verily, the only cure for ignorance is to ask questions. It would have been enough for him to perform dry ablution, or to use a small amount, or to tie a bandage around his head.
