Hadith on Mecca: The Prophet did not remodel the Ka’bah

Aisha reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to her, “O Aisha, had your nation not recently left ignorance, I would have had the Ka’bah pulled down and rebuilt to include the portion which had been missing. I would have made it level with the ground, with two doors, one towards the east and the other towards the west. By doing so, it would have been upon the foundation laid by Abraham.”

Al-Nawawi said, “In this tradition is evidence for the legal principle of rulings, among them: If two benefits conflict with each other, or a benefit and a harm conflict with each other and it is not possible to reconcile between acting on a benefit or leaving a harm, the more important interest takes precedence. As the Prophet explained, pulling down the Ka’bah and restoring it as it was since the founding by Abraham, peace and blessings be upon him, is a benefit, but it conflicted with a greater harm, which was his fear of putting to trial some of those who had recently embraced Islam. That is because they believed in the virtue of the Ka’bah and would view changing it as a great sin, so the Prophet left it.”
