Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “No one who has the weight of a seed of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” A man said, “But a man likes to have nice clothes and nice shoes.” The Prophet said, “Verily, Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty. Arrogance is to disregard the truth and to look down upon people.”

Imam al-Ghazali commented, “Vanity, arrogance, and pride are a deadly disease. The servant looks upon himself with an eye of honor and greatness, but upon others with an eye of disdain and humiliation. Rather, you must know that the truly virtuous are those deemed virtuous by Allah in the Hereafter, which is in the Unseen, sealed upon the outcome of one’s life. Thus, your belief that you are better than others is sheer ignorance. Instead, you should never look at anyone without seeing them as better than yourself, and that they have merits over you… Even if he is an unbeliever, say to yourself: I do not know. Perhaps he will embrace Islam, sealing his life with good deeds, and by his Islam be absolved of sins as a hair is drawn from dough. As for me—I seek refuge in Allah—perhaps Allah will lead me astray and I will disbelieve, sealing my life with evil deeds, so that tomorrow he is among those brought near to Allah, while I am among those cast away.”
