Hadith on Imamate: Prohibition of desiring power, authority

Abu Musa reported: Two of my cousins and myself entered the home of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. One of them said, “O Messenger of Allah, appoint us as leaders over some lands that Allah Almighty has entrusted to your authority.” The other said something similar to it. The Prophet said, “Verily, by Allah, we do not appoint this work to anyone who asks for it, or is eager for it.

Al-Nawawi said, “The scholars said the wisdom of one not being appointed who asks is that he would be held fully responsible for it, and Allah would not help him in it… If he does not have the support of Allah, he is not qualified and those unqualified are not appointed; in this is an indictment of seeking and desiring authority.”
