Imam al-Nawawi on Modesty, Good Conscience

In the Name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful

Imam al-Nawawi records in his book Meadows of the Righteous:

Chapter on modesty, its virtue, and encouragement to behave with it.

Ibn Umar reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by a man from the Ansar who was warning his brother about modesty, but the Prophet said:

Let him be, for modesty is part of faith.

‘Imran ibn Husayn reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Modesty does not bring anything but goodness.

In another narration, the Prophet said:

Modesty is good in all things.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Faith has sixty to seventy branches, the best of which is to declare there is no God but Allah, the least of which is to remove something harmful from the road, and modesty is a branch of faith.

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported:

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was more modest than a virgin in seclusion. If he saw something that he disliked, we would see it on his face.

Success comes from Allah, and Allah knows best.
