Al-Nawawi on hastening to break the fast

In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful

Al-Nawawi records in his book Riyad al-Salihin:

Sahl ibn Sa’d reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

People will continue in goodness as long as they hasten to break their fast.

Abu Atiyyah reported: Masruq and I visited Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, and he said, “O mother of the believers, there are two companions of Muhammad and neither of them hold back from doing good. One of them hastens to break his fast and to perform the evening prayer, while the other delays breaking his fast and performing the prayer.” Aisha asked, “Who is the one who breaks his fast and performs prayer?” He said, “It is Abdullah ibn Mas’ud.” Aisha said:

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to do so.

When one of you breaks his fast, let him break it with dates for they are blessed. If they are not found, let him break it with water for it is pure.

Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would break his fast before praying with fresh dates. If there were no fresh dates, then with dry dates. If there were no dry dates, then with some sips of water.
