Imam al-Nawawi on Kindness to the Poor and Weak

In the Name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful

Imam al-Nawawi records in his book Meadows of the Righteous:

Chapter on being kind to orphans, girls, and all the weak, the poor, and the brokenhearted, and being kind to them, having compassion for them, being humble with them, and lowering one’s wing to them

Source: Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn 1/376

Allah Almighty said:

And lower your wing for the believers.

Surat al-Hijr 15:88

And Allah said:

Patiently stick with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His pleasure. Do not let your eyes look beyond them, desiring the luxuries of this worldly life. And do not obey those whose hearts We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who follow only their desires and whose state is total loss.

Surat al-Kahf 18:28

And Allah said:

So do not oppress the orphan, nor repulse the beggar.

Surat al-Duha’ 93:9-10

And Allah said:

Have you seen the one who denies the final Judgment? That is the one who repulses the orphan, and does not encourage the feeding of the poor.

Surat al-Ma’un 107:1-3

Sa’d reported: We were with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when the idolaters said to the Prophet, “Drive these people away, lest they turn against us.” The Prophet thought within himself whatever Allah willed him to think, then Allah Almighty revealed the verse:

Do not dismiss those poor believers who invoke their Lord morning and evening, seeking His pleasure. You are not accountable for them whatsoever, nor are they accountable for you. So do not dismiss them, or you will be one of the wrongdoers.

Sahl ibn Sa’d reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

The one who cares for an orphan and myself will be together in Paradise like these two fingers of mine.

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever cares for two girls until they reach maturity, then him and I will come together on the Day of Resurrection like these two fingers of mine

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

The poor person is not the one who is satisfied with a date or two, or a morsel or two, but rather the poor person is only one who abstains from begging. Recite the verse if you wish, ‘They do not beg people persistently.’ (2:273)

In another narration, the Prophet said:

The truly poor man is not the one who goes around people and is dismissed by a morsel, two morsels, or one or two dates.

They said, “Then who is the poor man, O Messenger of Allah?” The Prophet said:

The one who does not find enough to satisfy himself, nor is he considered such that charity would be given to him, nor does he beg people for anything.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

One who lends effort to the widows and the poor is like one waging jihad in the way of Allah, or one who regularly prays at night and fasts during the day.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

The most evil food is the food of a wedding banquet, in which those who want to come are left out and those who are invited refuse. Whoever does not answer an invitation has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger.

And Abu Huraira said:

The worst food is the food of a wedding banquet in which the rich are invited but the poor are left out.

Aisha reported: A woman came to me along with her two daughters asking for charity, but she found nothing with me except one date. I gave it to her and she divided it between her two daughters. She did not eat anything herself, then she got up and left. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came in and I told him what happened. The Prophet said:

Whoever is tested with daughters in any way and treats them well, they will be their shield from Hellfire.

In another narration, the Prophet said:

Verily, Allah as assured her place in Paradise, or He has freed her from the Hellfire, by her daughter.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

O Allah, I have issued a warning regarding the rights of two vulnerable groups: orphans and women.

Mus’ab ibn Sa’d reported: Sa’d viewed himself as better than those below him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Are you not given support and provision due to your vulnerable ones?

Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2896, Grade: Sahih

Abu Darda reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Seek out your vulnerable on my behalf. Verily, you are only given provision and support from Allah due to the weak among you.
