In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Ibn Taymiyyah writes in his book Minhaj As-Sunnah:

Hasan Al-Basiri would say:

Verily, the tyrant Al-Hajjaj is a punishment from Allah, so do not repel the punishment of Allah with your hands. Rather, you must be submissive and humble.

Indeed, Allah the Exalted said:

We seized them with punishment, but they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humble themselves.

Surah Al-Mu’minun 23:76

Talaq ibn Habeeb would say:

Protect yourselves from tribulation with the mindfulness of Allah (taqwa).

It was said, “Make the mindfulness of Allah concise for us.” Talaq said:

Act in the obedience of Allah upon light from Allah and hoping for the mercy of Allah, and abandon disobedience to Allah upon light from Allah and fearing the punishment of Allah.

The best of the early Muslims prohibited rebellion and fighting in times of tribulation (fitnah), such as Abdullah ibn Umar, Sa’eed ibn Al-Musayyib, Ali ibn Al-Hussein, and others who prohibited rebellion against Yazeed in the year of Al-Harrah, and as Hasan Al-Basri, Mujahid, and others prohibited rebellion during the tribulation of Ibn Al-Ash’ath.

For this reason, it was established by the people of the Sunnah to abandon fighting in times of tribulation due to the firmly authenticated narrations from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and they would mention this matter in their works on creed. They ordered patience with the tyranny of the rulers and to abandon fighting them, even though a significant number of scholars fought against them during the tribulation.
