Ibn Al-Jawzi on Yusuf and the Blessings of Ramadan

Ramadan Kareem 1

By Abu Amina Elias

In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful

Ibn Al-Jawzi writes in Bustān al-Wā’iẓīn:

The twelve months are like the children of Jacob, upon him be peace, and the month of Ramadan compared to other months is like Joseph compared to his brothers. Just as Joseph was the most beloved child to Jacob, so is Ramadan the most beloved month to the Knower of the Unseen.

A good lesson for the nation of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is that Joseph was forbearing and forgiving and he was not hateful for their harsh treatment when he said, “No blame is upon you today.” (12:92) Likewise, Ramadan is the month of compassion, blessings, bounties, good deeds, deliverance from the Hellfire, and forgiveness from the Prevailing King. It overcomes all other months and what we have earned of sins and burdens.

Another good lesson is that Joseph’s brothers depended upon him to correct their mistakes and remove their errors after they had become companions of sins and faults. So he treated them well in their lodging, he fixed their situation, he fulfilled their hopes, and he fed them while they were hungry. He announced that they would be able to return and he said, “Put their merchandise into their saddlebags so they might recognize it.” (12:62) Thus, one was able to fix the mistakes of the other eleven. Likewise, the month of Ramadan can fix the mistakes in our deeds from the other eleven months. How much deficiency and negligence do we have in obedience to the Knowing, the Aware? We hope to avoid in the month of Ramadan our negligence in other months and to correct our corrupted affairs, to seal it over us with success and happiness, and to fortify ourselves with the rope of the King, the Forgiver if Allah the Exalted wills from His blessings, His kindness, His pardon, and His forgiveness. Indeed, He is the Seeing, the Hearing, the most excellent ally and protector.

Another lesson is that Jacob had eleven sons who were present with him and he saw them and understood their situation, yet his eyesight did not return due to their clothes. Rather, it returned due to the shirt of Joseph. His eyesight become clear, his strength returned after he was weak, and he could see after he was blind. Likewise, if the disobedient sinner breathes the aromas of Ramadan, he sits among those who remember Allah, he chooses companions for the sake of Islam and faith, and he abandons backbiting and slander, then he will be forgiven by the will of Allah after he was disobedient, he will come near after he was far, his heart will be enlightened after it was blind, his presence will be happy after it was miserable, he will be met with mercy after indignation, he will receive provision without limit or effort, he will be guided throughout his life, and his soul will be taken out gently at his death, he will be blessed with forgiveness when he meets Allah, and he will have the fortune of great degrees in Paradise.

By Allah, seize the opportunity of these virtues in these few days that you may achieve its plentiful blessings, its great ranks, and its long comfort by the will of Allah. By Allah, this is the abundant comfort, the position of the seeker, the state of contentment, the garden of happiness, the blessing of satisfaction, the good life. It cannot be achieved except by reverence for this month which the Almighty has honored and with which He favored Muhammad the chosen one. Whoever does not revere this month, then his destination is the Hellfire.
