In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

An-Nawawi records in his book, Riyad us-Saliheen:

Allah said:

O you who believe, when you rise to perform prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. If you are in a state of impurity, then purify yourselves, but if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful.

Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:6

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, on the Day of Resurrection, my followers will be distinguished by the radiant traces of their ablution so whoever can increase his radiance should do so.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

The adornment of a believer will reach wherever his ablution reaches.

Uthman ibn Affan reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever performs ablution in an excellent manner, then his sins will depart from his body even from beneath his fingernails.

Source: Sahih Muslim 245, Grade: Sahih

Humran, the freed slave of Uthman, reported: I saw Uthman call for a vessel of water and he poured water over his hands three times and then washed them. Then he put his right hand in the vessel and rinsed his mouth and cleaned his nose. Then he washed his face three times and his hands up to the elbow three times. Then he wiped his head and washed his feet three times. Then he said that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had said:

He who performed ablution like this ablution of mine and offered two cycles of prayer without allowing his thoughts to be distracted, then all his previous sins would be expiated.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

When a Muslim or a believer washes his face in ablution, then every sin which he committed with his eyes will be washed away with the last drop of water; when he washes his hands, then every sin which he committed with his hands will be washed away with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, then every sin which he committed with his feet will be washed away with the last drop of water until he emerges purified from sin.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to the graveyard and he said:

Peace be upon you, the abode of the believers and we will join you, if Allah wills. I love to see my brothers.

They said, “Are we not your brothers, O Messenger of Allah?” He said:

You are my companions, and our brothers are those who have not yet come into the world.

They said, “O Messenger of Allah, how will you recognize the people of your nation who have not yet been born?” He said:

Suppose a man had horses with white blazes on their foreheads and legs among horses which were all dark, would he not recognize his own horses?

They said, “Of course.” He said:

They will come with bright faces and arms and legs due to their ablution, and I will arrive at the fountain ahead of them. Some people will be driven away from my fountain as a stray camel is driven away. I will say: Come! Come! But it will be said to me: These people changed themselves after you. So I will say: Be off! Be off!

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Shall I not tell you about a deed with which Allah will expiate your sins and raise your status?

They said, “Of course, O Messenger of Allah.” He said:

Performing ablution when it is difficult, taking many steps to the mosque, and waiting for one prayer after another; that is like guarding the frontier.

Umar ibn Al-Khattab reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever performs ablution perfectly and then he says: I bear witness there is no god but Allah alone without any partners, and I bear witness Muhammad is his servant and his messenger. O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves. If he says this, then the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him and he may enter through whichever he wishes.
