By Abu Amina Elias

In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful

An-Nawawi records in his book Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn:

Sahl ibn Sa’d reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

People will continue to be upon goodness as long as they hasten to break their fast.

Abu Atiyyah reported: Masruq and I visited Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, and he said, “O mother of the believers, there are two companions of Muhammad and neither of them hold back from doing good. One of them hastens to break his fast and to perform the evening prayer, while the other delays breaking his fast and performing the prayer.” Aisha asked, “Who is the one who breaks his fast and performs prayer?” Masruq said, “It is Abdullah ibn Mas’ud.” Aisha said:

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to do so.

Umar ibn Al-Khattab reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

When the night approaches from the east and day retreats from the west and the sun has set, then it is time to break the fast.

Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa reported: We were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, during the month of Ramadan. When the sun began to set, the Prophet said to a man:

Dismount and prepare our barely drink.

The man said, “O Messenger of Allah, there is still daylight.” The Prophet said:

Dismount and prepare our barely drink.

The man dismounted, prepared the drink, and gave it to the Prophet. The Prophet drank it and then he said while pointing:

When you see the night approaching from the east, then it is time to break the fast.

Salman ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

When one of you fasts, then let him break his fast with dates. If he does not find dates, then with water because water is pure.

Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would break his fast before praying with fresh dates. If there were no fresh dates then with dry dates, and if there were no dry dates then with some water.
