Riyad us Saliheen Sincere Counsel

By Abu Amina Elias for FaithinAllah.org

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

An-Nawawi records in his book Riyad us-Saliheen:

Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Do not ask someone to give up his seat to another, but rather make it easy and provide accommodation.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

If a man stands from his seat and later returns it, then he is more entitled to it.

Salman-Al-Farisi reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

No one takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, uses oil or perfume in his house, then proceeds for prayer, and he does not separate two persons sitting together, then prays as much as is written for him, and remains silent while the prayer leader is delivering the sermon, except that his sins between this Friday and the previous would be forgiven.

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

It is not lawful for a man to sit between two people unless he has their permission.

Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

The best assemblies are those with the most room for people.

Abu Barza reported: Toward the end of his life the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would say when leaving an assembly:

O Allah, glory and praise be to you. I testify there is no God but you, I ask your forgiveness and I repent to you.

A man said to him, “O Messenger of Allah, you have spoken words never you have never uttered before.” The Prophet said:

It is an expiation for what happens during the assembly.

Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would not stand from assembly until saying these supplications for his companions:

O Allah, apportion for us such fear of you that will protect us from acts of disobedience, and apportion for us obedience to you that will take us to Paradise, and apportion for us certainty that will make calamities easier to endure. O Allah, let us enjoy our hearing, our sight, and our power as long as you keep us alive and make heirs for us from our offspring and let retaliation be upon those who oppress us. Support us against those who are hostile to us and let no misfortune afflict our religion. Let not the world be our greatest concern or the limit of our knowledge, and let not those rule over us who are not merciful to us.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever sits in a gathering and indulges in idle talk but before getting up he supplicates: O Allah, glory and praise be to you and I testify there is no God but you and I seek your forgiveness and I repent to you; then Allah will forgive him for whatever happened in the assembly.

Whoever sits in a place and does not remember Allah will earn the displeasure of Allah, and whoever lies down for sleep and does not remember Allah will earn the displeasure of Allah.

There are no people who rise from a gathering in which Allah was not mentioned but that it is as if they are rising from the carcass of a donkey, and it will be a cause of regret for them.

No people sit in a gathering without remembering Allah or sending blessings upon their Prophet except that they will earn the displeasure of Allah. If He wishes He will punish them, or if He wishes He will forgive them.
